Form and Balance
Objectives:
Two primary fundamental elements of all sculpture are form
(and the relationship between multiple forms) and balance. These are your focus for this assignment. You will use found object assemblage and
basic fabrication methods to create your project.
Requirements:
Combine box beam forms (fabricated using mat board, masking
tape, and hot glue as demonstrated in class) with a single found object of your
choosing. Follow these criteria:
·
Your object must be physically integrated into
at least one box beam form, not simply glued to a surface.
·
Keep the surface area and number of points that
touch the floor to a minimum. 2 or 3
points maximum.
·
Beams can be straight, angular, or curved
·
Your piece must have an uncanny balance; it must
free-stand, but appear as if it should not be able to – an impossible balance.
·
All surfaces must be painted or collaged, or
otherwise “finished”
·
Maximum height: 20”
Be inventive and mold the parameters to your interests in
terms to the object you select and what you “do” to it or with it. Questions to consider: Is it man made?
Natural? New? Old? Personal? Generic? Specific?
Unknown? Its characteristics are
its language, how we relate to it. How
can you change our understanding of it by the way it relates to your beams?
Materials:
·
Mat board, masking tape, and hot glue
·
You may integrate plaster gauze and use any safe
and available surface media (paint, collage, drawing, etc.)
